Post summary
I created an audio series for Audible, available at this link or by searching “Embrace Discomfort” within Audible.
The series is an extension of many of the themes from my books, The Comfort Crisis and Scarcity Brain.

Jaspr air purifiers. Air quality is highly linked to health—and no one talks about it. I think using a Jaspr is one of the easiest things you can do to improve your health—all you have to do is plug it in and remember to breathe. Having a Jaspr in my room seemed to improve my sleep, and I love watching the Jaspr in our kitchen kick on and filter our air after my frequent cooking disasters. Get a discount here.

Function Health offers 5x more testing than typical blood work. Function now tests for “forever chemicals" (PFAS)—potentially harmful substances found in nonstick cookware, food packaging, and even drinking water. PFAS can impact hormones, immunity, and overall health. Your Function results are reviewed by a clinician, but work with your doctor to analyze your results.

The post
A couple of years ago, I began talking to Audible about creating an audio series that would dive deeper into many of the themes in The Comfort Crisis and Scarcity Brain.
The idea was to take some of the ideas from the book and explore them further with a wise guest.
Although the modern world has many upsides, it can also leave us unhealthy in many ways.
In modern life, we’re surrounded by comfort—climate-controlled rooms, instant access to food, entertainment on demand, and minimal need for physical exertion. Yet, paradoxically, we’re seeing skyrocketing rates of anxiety, depression, obesity, and chronic disease. The evidence suggests that by eliminating discomfort, we’ve also weakened our resilience.
We’re living longer, yes. But more of our years are spent unhealthy, immobile, and suffering under the weight of mental health issues.
I believe taking on the sort of challenges humans faced for millennia can help us uncover mental resilience, peak performance, and personal growth. Discomfort isn’t just something to endure—it’s something to seek out. Research shows that voluntary discomfort strengthens both the body and the mind.
That’s the idea behind Embrace Discomfort, a 10-part audio series designed to explore the transformative power of stepping outside our comfort zones.
Each episode takes a deep dive into a different form of discomfort—physical, mental, environmental, or emotional—and examines how leaning into hard things can unlock our greatest potential.
I’m excited about this series because it allows me to do things I can’t do with books.
When I write books, I’m limited by how many words I can devote to a topic. I also have to quote expert sources, which means I end up reading the quotes in the audio version of the book rather than having listeners hear the source in their own voice.
Embrace Discomfort allowed me to go deeper into the topics I’m fascinated by and let listeners hear from the visionaries I spoke to in their own words. Think of it as a sonic journey examining how different challenges can help us reclaim our physical, mental, and spiritual health.
You’ll hear from:
A top American intel official who leveraged the power of nature after years at war.
A champion ultra-runner and ski mountaineer who runs, hikes, and skis the hardest mountains in the world while balancing a job as a wildland firefighter.
A mythologist who can help us understand the deeper layers of Misogi.
The nation’s top researcher on fear who can give us a new understanding of what fear really is and how we can use it for good.
The brightest mind in nutrition who realizes eating well—and changing any other habit—hinges on behavioral science.
And many more …
The series is out now on Audible. Listen here.
Note: The series is available exclusively on Audible.
This means any Audible member with a paid subscription can listen without using a credit because the series is part of the Plus catalog.
If you don’t have an Audible Membership, here are two options:
You can purchase the series with a la carte pricing.
Or, better: Sign up for a free 30-day Audible trial and listen. If you’ll use the subscription, great. If you won’t, just cancel your account before 30 days and you won’t get charged.
Give it a listen, and let me know what you think.
On Wednesday, we’ll cover my favorite quote and lesson from each of the 10 episodes.
Have fun, don’t die, listen up,
-Michael
