The Misogi Framework

6 steps for avoiding Misogi traps and getting more out of the challenge

I’ve given several talks this month on Misogi, and I keep getting asked the same question.

For those unfamiliar: A Misogi is an epic, annual challenge we take on for growth. It has two rules:

  1. Make it really hard.

  2. Don’t die.

We define “really hard” by saying you should have a 50/50 shot at finishing. When you have a 50% shot at success, you inevitably hit a moment of doubt. You think you’re done and have to quit.

But if you can keep putting one foot in front of another, you get a second moment. That’s when you realize you’re past what you thought was your limit. You realize you’ve sold yourself short and have far more on board than you thought. That insight can lead you to see that you’re far more capable than you believed—and that changes what you’re capable of from then on.

Misogi has become far more popular since the publication of my book, The Comfort Crisis—and that’s fantastic.

But I’ve also noticed a troubling trend. A question I’ve been asked a few times recently: “If you’re constantly doing Misogis, don’t you get to a point where you just can’t go any further?”

The answer contains a guide for how to approach Misogis and get the most from them.

  • The “Misogi Arms Race”: The troubling trend I’ve seen that traps people in a repetitive loop and prevents the very growth they’re looking for.

  • The Most Important Element in Misogi: If you’re missing it, it means you’re not really doing a Misogi.

  • My 6-Part Misogi Framework: The complete, step-by-step guide to help you avoid these common pitfalls and design an annual challenge that actually unlocks transformation.
