My addiction journey completely changed when I stopped seeing my drinking as a problem, and instead viewed it as a solution. I could then ask myself, “a solution to what?” and finally find recovery that stuck when I unearthed the true root problems.
I think for today’s takeaway the shorter length was great. Many of the longer ones make sense though in order to have the story be more robust. As you’ve noted a number of times, the way we internalize and share insights is often more through stories than a one line takeaway.
I like the short letters. But honestly I pay for your deep dives. The short letter is cool for a quick reflection.
I often have a search for the problem first mindset. I find it difficult to manage my time with this skill because often I can justify multiple problems. So I keep switching from problem to problem.
First, I like both, in-depth and lengthy [especially mechanisms and Hx] AND short and practical formats. For long and deep, it's easy to provide an outline up front, so readers can skip the minutiae if only interested in take-aways.
On problems:
Problems can be REAL and BIG ... or minute and magnified.
Problems are simply part of life. Afterall, stress is the 'ups and downs' of life, and the path towards learning, growth and discovery.
✅ If a problem has been identified, dive into the potential root cause of it.
Maybe it’s also time to dig a little deeper into the “… but I’ve been doing everything right” … What IS everything right?
A good place to 'start' is an honest check-up of our DAILY, weekly and seasonal habits, patterns & practices, those BIG ROCKS that support our Pillars of Robust Aging [Hardiness]: Purpose, Movement, Diet, Rhythms and Stress. These Pillars buttress one another. They are not silos.
✅ From Steven Covey, take his Big Rocks in a jar concept of time management, and apply it to 'living life': ROCKS in first, pebbles second, granules, last. People want granule solutions to big rock problems. Granule solutions merely obscure the root of the identified problem.
Good helpful piece and the tempo of the read felt just right without being too breezy. I felt like I got something meaningful out of it without spending a ton of time. So thumbs up on the quicker version!
Regarding shorter posts, you could ask the question “what message are you trying to convey?” Sometimes it needs to be longer like gear not stuff or shorter as the case today. Kinda parallel to today’s message!
Loved the shorter newsletter and this question is an amazing one! It's so easy to think you need to add all the things people are trying to sell you because they make them sound so great. Most of the time, they don't make a significant change. Going to try to remind myself of this regularly!
I like both versions! I do catch myself delaying on reading your emails because I know it’s going to take me awhile to sit and not be distracted by other things and I want to give my undivided attention to them. This was so short and before I got to the end, I thought to myself “this is nice and short!”.
Anyways, I’m also behind on your podcasts. I finished the whole 30 one and wanted to share that I am personally glad you don’t talk about politics. I like that I can escape all the noise and focus on what you provide bc it has nothing to do with it! I come to you for health and fitness things, not your opinion on politics so I disagreed with her there. I think you could potentially lose people if it was brought up since it’s such a touchy subject nowadays. Also, politics doesn’t have to be spoken about by everyone on their platforms. Just my two cents.
In a world full of chaos and information-overload — reminding ourselves to remember and focus on what we actually might need to fix or change makes for simpler sorting.

Bam. You nailed it. Same for me.
We have a great podcast episode about this topic (and how it applies beyond addiction) coming up soon.
Can’t wait to give it a listen!

Likewise!

✅ Simple, not easy, but worth starting here.

I enjoy the research, and your writing style. The length of your post have never been an issue for me.
Have an awesome day
