I enjoyed this sleep article. Managing sleep is interesting to me because there are many variables that impact it and I feel my sleep quality has worsened as I have aged. I am will be flying to Greece in a couple of weeks and my concern is dealing with jet lag. I am trying a few things to minimize the impact of jet lag so I can hit the ground jogging (vice running) when I get to Greece.
Can you clarify what that graph is saying? It looks to me like it shows that ~4 hours of sleep has the same all-cause mortality as 8 hours of sleep, but that can't be right...
It does make sense to me. Example - miles per gallon. If you graph efficiency, the most efficient mpg is ~55 mph for a standard sedan. As you move further from the most efficient point in either direction, the efficiency declines. So a sedan may have a peak efficiency of 40 mpg at 55 mph. However, at 35 mph and 75 mph, the efficiency drops to 30 mpg.
Applying the same approach of mpg to sleep and all-cause mortality, it makes sense that there is a high end and low end of sleep duration that would have similar effect. In this case, it happens to be 4 and 8 hrs 🤷🏽♂️.
Depending on the sleeping pill, they are far from placebos. The referenced article did not refer to prescription sleep aids. Most over the counter pills may work by the placebo effect.
Most anyone who has taken Ambien or the like can testify that they aren't placebos. I do wish more people would not rely on them so much.
This article was helpful. I’ve been tracking my sleep for a while now trying to maximize deep sleep. I had a few nights over the past year with longer (for me) stretches and I felt amazing afterwards. But I cannot replicate it which has been frustrating. Knowing that it’s enigmatic to even the specialists and that we’re all different helps with those expectations.
The sentinel hypothesis is fascinating! Years ago, I read about the concept without the name to go with it!
The way it was broken out when I read about it went something like this:
Teens stay up late to keep watch.
Parents of young children/babies are up in the middle of the night to keep watch.
Older folks are up earlier to keep watch.
It may have just been wishful thinking by some teen to justify late nights 😂, but it does track in my world.

I have a hard time believing that it’s just as unhealthy to sleep 8 hours as it is to sleep 4 hours.

What about sleep ranges for kids? Like 9 years old to young teens?
The "sleep cleans our brains" was the pivot point for me, changing my view from something that I could short cut to basically free healthcare.
