The sentinel hypothesis is fascinating! Years ago, I read about the concept without the name to go with it!

The way it was broken out when I read about it went something like this:

Teens stay up late to keep watch.

Parents of young children/babies are up in the middle of the night to keep watch.

Older folks are up earlier to keep watch.

It may have just been wishful thinking by some teen to justify late nights 😂, but it does track in my world.

Depending on the sleeping pill, they are far from placebos. The referenced article did not refer to prescription sleep aids. Most over the counter pills may work by the placebo effect.

Most anyone who has taken Ambien or the like can testify that they aren't placebos. I do wish more people would not rely on them so much.
