Video/Post Summary

  • I’m taking you on a tour of my home gym. Watch the video tour above, which I aired live on the Substack app. Thanks to everyone who tuned in!

  • In the video, I walk through each piece of equipment and explain why I like it. I also answered viewer questions along the way.

  • In the writeup below, I’ve listed and linked to each piece of equipment.

The Writeup

Today is the second Friday of the month—which means it’s time for Gear Not Stuff.

Read more about the idea behind Gear Not Stuff here. Quick reminder:

  • Gear Not Stuff is a framework that helps us make smarter purchasing decisions.

    • Stuff is a possession for the sake of it. Stuff clutters. We buy stuff impulsively to alleviate boredom or stress, or to solve problems we could tackle creatively with what we already own.

    • Gear has a clear purpose of helping us achieve a higher purpose. Gear is a tool we can use to have better experiences and improve our lives.

This month I’m walking you through my garage gym—which is a place full of gear that helps me live better.

The video walks through my equipment that’s survived two decades of buying, testing, and ruthlessly cutting stuff that didn’t deliver.

A home gym saves far more money and time than a gym membership. Plus you won’t have to wait for equipment or be sonically assaulted by your big-box gym’s EDM soundtrack and meatheads grunting.

Of course, a home gym will also help you exercise more often—and adherence is the key to long-term success.

Watch the video above for the full live tour, and scroll down for a written breakdown of the gear. I covered:

  • All 19 pieces of equipment.

  • Why I like each.

  • A link to check each out.

My Garage Gym Equipment (All 19 Pieces)

  • Shoes: Salomon XT-6 (lifting) + Arc’Teryx Norvan LD 4 (trail running)

    • Lifting: Salomon XT-6. Their solid footbed, good arch support, and large heel drop can lead to better form.

    • Trail running: Arc’Teryx Novan LD 4. I wrote about why I love these here.

  • Mats: Horse stall mats

    • Cheap, bombproof, easy to find (but good luck moving them around). Consider buying on Amazon if you don’t want to transport them.
